Home/Blog / How to Get Rid of Jowls

modelIt is very common for individuals to develop “jowls” in the lower facial areas over time. These collections of loose, excess skin around the jaws are a natural part of aging as collagen, elastin, and other properties that help keep the skin youthful and firm gradually diminish. Weight fluctuations and even hereditary factors can contribute to the development of jowls. While jowls can have a noticeable effect on overall facial aesthetics, it is important to know that this very common concern can be successfully treated.

In many cases, the most effective way to get rid of prominent jowls is with facelift surgery. A facelift is designed to rejuvenate the middle to lower regions of the face, and often involves lifting of the upper neck skin, as well. The procedure removes excess, inelastic skin while giving the remaining skin a firmer and smoother look. This can also result in much more defined jawline contours, virtually eliminating signs of jowls and taking years off one’s facial appearance. Facelift surgery can be an ideal treatment for both women and men who are concerned about the development of jowls, and the results can last long into the future with proper attention paid to skin care and a healthy diet.

For some individuals, there is another option for diminishing signs of jowls that does not require surgery: injectable dermal fillers. Some products in the JUVÉDERM® line can be particularly beneficial for adding subtle amounts of volume in the mid-facial region. This process can ultimately help “camouflage” the jowls to some degree. With that in mind, dermal fillers can typically be effective only in patients who are exhibiting jowls that are relatively mild and less prominent in appearance. Also, the results will not last as long compared to the effects of facelift surgery. Still, for patients who primarily want to avoid surgery and who have concerns that can be effectively treated with injectables, dermal fillers may be an ideal alternative.
