Permalip

While traditional types of lip augmentation procedures such as injectable fillers or solid implants can have their advantages, many patients would like a permanent alternative that can give their lips a fuller, natural-looking contour with a minimized risk of significant movement restriction. PermaLip®, or Perma Facial Implant™, is an FDA-approved treatment made of soft, solid silicone that is designed to give you permanent lip enhancement with natural-looking results. The procedure is also reversible, and it does not involve periodic injections and “touch-up” sessions to keep the results going. Our board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Charles Perry, is happy to add PermaLip® to his list of advanced cosmetic enhancement options to help you meet your goals.

Is PermaLip® Right for Me?

Good candidates for PermaLip® include those who are in reasonably good physical and emotional health, and those with realistic expectations for results. Patients with blood clotting problems, certain diseases or conditions (diabetes, lupus, or others), current cold sores, and/or excessive scarring among the lips may not qualify for this procedure. In these cases, Dr. Perry can discuss alternative treatment options with you that may help you to achieve your goals.

How Does PermaLip® Work?

PermaLip® is a silicone implant that is available in a variety of sizes. You and Dr. Perry will determine the best size for your unique needs during your initial consultation. One of the many advantages of PermaLip® is that it is designed with a smooth, contoured shape and materials that minimize the risk of tissue ingrowth, which can ultimately restrict movement. It’s also a reversible procedure, which makes it possible for you to go back to your original appearance should you desire to do so later on. Another advantage that PermaLip® holds over injectable fillers is that, since results are permanent, you will not need to undergo additional “maintenance” treatment sessions to keep the effects going.

PermaLip® procedures are performed by making small incisions at the corners of the lips, followed by placement of the implant. The incisions are very tiny and are created in areas where any residual scarring should not be noticeable. The entire procedure typically takes less than an hour and is performed with a topical numbing agent applied to the lips.

What Is Recovery from PermaLip® Treatment Like?

You can expect some swelling, tenderness, and bruising after PermaLip®; treatment, but these side effects should dissipate over the next few days. Any discomfort can be alleviated with medication. There will also be some sensitivity to the lips for about two weeks when subjected to light or medium pressure.

Results from PermaLip®

Once the swelling from the surgery subsides, you should be able to see the optimal results of PermaLip®. This usually occurs after a few days. Since PermaLip® is a silicone facial implant, the results will not wear off – in fact, they will be permanent, unless you elect to have the procedure reversed at a later time.

Risks of PermaLip®

Although Dr. Perry will take every precaution to minimize risks, PermaLip® is a surgical procedure and therefore carries some possibilities of complications. These include:

  • Bleeding from a hardened implant
  • Infection
  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia or to the implants themselves
  • Nerve damage

While complications are rare, you should be aware of any risks involved with any treatment you undergo. Dr. Perry will discuss all aspects of the procedure with you during your consultation.
