Breast surgeries are common cosmetic procedures, with an assortment of treatments available to enhance a patient’s appearance and confidence. There are a multitude of reasons why patients pursue breast enhancement surgery, from adding/restoring volume to achieve a larger breast size to addressing changes that have occurred from the natural aging process. No matter the reasoning, breast augmentation and breast lift surgeries can be ideal options when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.

At Chrysalis Cosmetics, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Charles Perry, MD, and his team of aesthetic professionals can discuss which procedure may be right for you and help you pursue your aesthetic goals. Below, we’ll walk you through the two treatments and highlight some of their differences.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a popular procedure designed to enhance the volume, shape, and size of the breasts. A skilled plastic surgeon can use saline or silicone breast implants to achieve an improved contour and shape with results that look both organic and beautiful. Ultimately, breast augmentation can revive the appearance of the breasts and have a positive effect on overall body proportions. With that in mind, breast augmentation is not capable of significantly improving breasts that are affected by ptosis (sagginess). For those concerns a breast lift is typically more ideal.

Breast Lift

A breast lift can be the right treatment for patients whose breasts have lost “perkiness.” It is very common for excess, inelastic skin to collect in the breasts over time, giving them a sagging or drooping look. Breast lift surgery, also known as “mastopexy,” can elevate the breasts to a higher, more youthful position and provide them with a firmer appearance. Unlike an augmentation, a breast lift cannot add volume or shape to the breasts; however, it can be combined with a breast augmentation to simultaneously enhance volume and reduce signs of breast ptosis if those are both concerns that patients would like to address. Mastopexy augmentation is a very common procedure for many who want to address all of their breast issues.
