BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX ® Cosmetic, a purified form of botulinum toxin, is a popular method of reducing or eliminating frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s-feet around the eye area, forehead creases, thick bands in the neck, and fine lines that develop with age. BOTOX® injections at our office in Sacramento, near Stockton and Roseville, are safe and convenient, and the wrinkle-reducing results of each treatment last up to four months.  Many people are finding that a combination of Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm provides for a longer lasting correction and a more balanced natural appearance.  For some Laser Resurfacing, Juvederm and Botox Cosmetic provides a more complete rejuvenation.  At your consultation Dr. Charles Perry will provide you with some options to address you aesthetic concerns.

Dysport

Dysport much like Botox Cosmetic is used to chemically relax the muscles of the face. The relaxation of the facial muscles attained with Dysport injections are completed quickly, taking only about 10 -15 minutes. The effects can usually be seen within 2 to 4 days. Dr. Perry will begin by examining your face and the sources of your creases or wrinkles. He will identify the muscles to be treated, cleanse the area, apply a topical or local anesthetic if needed, and then delivers Dysport or Restylane or even Juvederm if needed to the treatment area through a micro needle. After treatment, you will want to ice the area for 10 minutes and you will be free to return to your usual activities.

Restylane®

Restylane® is a natural, hypoallergenic dermal filler used to correct age-related facial wrinkles, folds, and hollowness, including the deep creases that appear between the nose and mouth. Unlike BOTOX® Cosmetic or Sculptra™, Restylane® injections at our practice near Folsom, Stockton, Woodland, Yuba City, and Roseville can also add volume to the lips to compensate for aging or naturally thin lips. Off FDA label uses of Restylane for volume in the cheeks, lower eyelid brow and nose can add quite a dramatic enhancement. Some patients find that Restylane combined with Dysport and a light Laser resurfacing can add qiute a boost to their appearance and they can return to work that same day.

Juvéderm®

Thinking about facial enhancement. Juvéderm® may be right for you. Juvéderm® is the latest in in a line of hyaluronic acids to be produced by Allergan, makers of Botox Cosmetic. There are several types of Juvéderm® to choose from. Juvéderm® Ultra is used for fine lines and is a smaller finer filler. Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is a little firmer and is great for larger lines or creases and lifting or volumizing the face. Juvéderm® is similar to Restylane, in that it is a hyaluronic acid that is used to correct age related wrinkles and volume loss that occurs with aging. Juvéderm® is also used in combination with laser rejuvenation and Botox. Dr Charles Perry likes the way the combination of Juvéderm® and Botox look as the effects are often synergistic. When considering facial rejuvenation it is important to consider that not all people need only one syringe. Often some will look better with several syringes of product and different combinations of products including Juvéderm®, Sculptra, Restylane or Radiesse.

Juvéderm® is a smooth product that enables your tissues to hold more water and provides a natural soft look and feels smooth as well. If you are over 18 and thinking of facial enhancement and want a smooth look and feel Juvéderm® may be right for you.

Juvéderm® is hypoallergenic. It contains a sugar or polymer produced from bacteria that occurs naturally in our tissues and is produced naturally by cells specifically for the human.

Where is Juvéderm® used

Most commonly Juvéderm® is used in the creases around the lips. Non-FDA uses that are commonly sought are improving the fullness of the lips and around the eyes to reduce the wrinkles. It can also be used to shape the eye brows and the dorsum of the nose.

Risks of Juvéderm®

The injection of Juvéderm® is often done with local numbing medications to make the injection comfortable. Bruising and swelling are common with injectables however these are often temporary and resolve in a couple of days.

Sculptra™ (Injectable Poly-L-Lactic Acid)

Sculptra™ is a safe, synthetic, biocompatible material containing poly-L-lactic acid. FDA approved for the treatment of facial hollowness and facial wasting associated with HIV, Sculptra™ is a long-lasting product that improves aesthetics by restoring lost volume to the face. Sculptra™ is commonly administered to treat facial indentations, as well as the appearance of hollow eyes and sunken cheeks.

In addition to restoring facial volume to HIV patients, we offer Sculptra™ at our practice near Stockton to treat age-related facial hollowness. Sculptra™ works by stimulating the body to build new collagen, the protein building block of skin and healthy tissue. This collagen rebuilding takes about four weeks to begin and continues for up to four years.

Sculptra™ is a nonsurgical treatment. The product is injected under the skin using micro needles, much in the same way Restylane® or BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered.

Candidates for Sculptra™

Sculptra™ is the ideal treatment for patients experiencing facial fat loss, either as a result of illness or the natural aging process. Sculptra™ can have similar effects as Restylane®, so consult with Dr. Perry to find out which is best for you.

Sculptra™ is not recommended for those who:

  • Individuals who are allergic to Sculptra™

Discuss your medical history with Dr. Perry prior to treatment to avoid allergy-related complications.

  • Individuals with an active infection or inflammation at the injection site.

Things to Consider Before Undergoing Sculptra™ Injections

Repeat treatments are often necessary

Most patients require three to four treatments to achieve optimal results. The number of treatments needed depends on the degree of facial hollowness being corrected.

Massage is often required for optimal results

For more information about facial massage after Sculptra™ treatment, consult Dr. Perry and your aftercare instructions.

Touch-up treatments may be necessary

Although the results of Sculptra™ treatment can last up to four years, follow-up treatments may be necessary to maintain your new look.

How is Sculptra™ injected?

Administering Sculptra™ injections at our practice in Sacramento near Stockton is a simple, minimally invasive process. Dr. Perry will determine the areas to be targeted, then clean them with an antiseptic. He may give you a topical or local anesthetic to numb the area and will use tiny needles to inject Sculptra™ under the skin. While bruising, irritation, etc. may occur at the injection site, Sculptra™ injections do not require any downtime. However, icing the area to control swelling is advised; see your aftercare instructions for details.

Risks of Sculptra™

There are few complications related to treatment with Sculptra™. However, it helps to be aware of risks before deciding whether to undergo Sculptra™ application.

Tiny bumps felt under the skin

In most cases, these bumps are not visible but when the treated area is pressed, they can be felt. In some cases these bumps disappear on their own.

Bruising

Bruising is possible after any type of injection. Any bruising will disappear on its own, and in the meantime can be covered with makeup.

Skin discoloration

Ecchymosis is a type of bruising that causes skin discoloration. It is caused by blood from ruptured blood vessels leaking into surrounding tissues. This condition should resolve with no treatment.

Redness

Erythema is a type of post-treatment redness caused by inflammation. It is usually minimal and temporary.

Discomfort at the injection site

Like BOTOX® Cosmetic or any other injectable treatment, discomfort, bruising, and irritation can occur at the injection site. However, local or topical anesthetic can be used to make the injections painless.

Perlane®

Perlane® works wonders at diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, and acne scars. It is also useful to augment the lips for a fuller, more youthful aesthetic, and adding volume to the cheeks and chin. This dermal filler is composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance, which means that there is no need to undergo an allergy test. Hyaluronic acids bind to water to give a smoother look that is soft, mobile and natural. Perlane® differentiates itself from other dermal fillers because it can be used to fill hollows under the eyes, as well provide volume to cheeks that may have taken on a sunken appearance due to loss of fat. Perlane® is a larger molecule than Restylane and is often useful to address more prominent signs of facial aging such as deep wrinkles and skin folds. Results of Perlane® also tend to last longer than other injectables such as Prevelle or Prevelle Silk, ranging from 6 to 12 months, which can be extended with touch-up treatments. Perlane can be used in combination with Restylane Botox or Dysport and Laser Therapies as well to enhance your appearance in one setting.

How is Perlane® injected?

Perlane® is injected directly into the treatment areas using a very thin needle. A local anesthetic may also be used to numb the area and make you feel more comfortable during the procedure. Some patients in the Sacramento Roseville area use a topical numbing cream as well to enhance the comfort. Dr Charles Perry a Plastic Surgeon will also use a cooling device to enhance your comfort and reduce the risk of bruising. Depending on the number of areas being treated, Perlane® injections at our Sacramento and Modesto-area practice typically only take about 20-30 minutes to complete. Normal daily activities can usually be resumed immediately after treatment, and most patients can see results right after the procedure.

Fat Transfer

Structural fat transfer is an increasingly popular minimally invasive method for rejuvenating the face, lips and hands, as well as improving facial contours, especially in areas including the cheeks, chin, or lips. Unlike BOTOX®, Restylane®, or Sculptra™, fat transfer uses the patient’s own tissue to augment or enhance certain features, such as thin lips or hollow cheeks, or to fill in the face to combat facial hollowness attributed to aging, trauma, or infection. At Chrysalis Cosmetics, fat transfer is able to produce lip and facial augmentation results that are as dramatic as those achieved with the surgical placement of facial implants.

The advantages of the fat transfer method are numerous. Fat tissue is soft, and its use in filling defects allows for a natural appearance and feel. In addition, there is no risk of the substance being rejected or causing allergy, since the only material used for enhancement is the patient’s own tissue.

Carefully placed fat injections can be used to correct facial scars, hollowness caused by the aggressive removal of under-eye bags during eyelid surgery, and similar problems. In short, fat can be used to improve the appearance of any area of the body that could use extra volume: the chin, jawline, eyes, forehead, temples, sternum, bridge of the nose, and so on.

Candidates for Fat Transfer

The ideal candidate for fat transfer is a healthy, mentally stable adult seeking to add volume to the cheeks, chin, jawline, lips, or any other area of the body in order to correct for the effects of aging, disease, trauma, and genetics.

Fat transfer is not recommended for:

  • Individuals with unrealistic expectations

Fat transfer can yield impressive results, but only if one is willing to undergo three or more treatments and accept the procedure’s limitations.

Things to Consider Before Undergoing Fat Transfer

Fat transfer may cause cold sores to reappear

If you have suffered from facial cold sores in the past, it’s possible that needle punctures will contribute to a recurrence. To minimize this risk, talk to Dr. Perry about useful medications.

Fat transfer causes no allergic reactions

Because the filler is your own fat, there is no risk that the tissue will trigger rejection or allergy. However, some of the fat will be absorbed by the body.

Fat transfer requires fat harvesting

In some cases, the donor site will be temporarily painful or irritated. Fat harvested during liposuction is not usually suitable for transfer.

Slight over-correction is necessary

Overcorrection is required for optimal fat transfer results. This is because only about half of the transferred tissue survives.

Results are visible in three months

It takes three months for the end result of fat transfer to fully emerge. At this point, the fat that remains will be permanent.

Repeat treatments may be necessary

Two to three treatment sessions are often required to achieve optimal results.

How is fat transfer performed?

Fat transfer is a multi-step process. First, the donor area (the abdomen, hips, or thighs) is anesthetized. Fat is carefully harvested from the area, then purified, and filtered in preparation for transfer. Then, the fat cells are injected wherever they are needed. Dr. Perry will over-correct the defect, filling the area with an over abundance of fat cells because about half of the fat will be reabsorbed into the body.

Risks of Fat Transfer

The following list is an introduction to some of the risks of fat transfer. You will have further discussions of the procedure’s risks with Dr. Perry during your consultation.

Asymmetry

While the asymmetry of the human face can usually be improved using fat transfer, it’s also possible for the procedure to create or worsen asymmetry.

Infection

Infection at the donor site or the site where fat was injected is possible and can be treated with antibiotics.

Hematoma (fluid accumulation under the skin)

Fluid retention may require Dr. Perry to drain the area.

Formation of scar tissue or fatty cysts

Scar tissue and fatty cysts can be treated surgically, but may lead to a disappointing cosmetic result.

Complete Pre- and Post-treatment Instructions for Fat Transfer Patients

Dr. Perry has prepared this comprehensive list of instructions to make your fat transfer experience as successful as possible. We recommend that you read over the guidelines before coming in on the day of the procedure and print them out to reference during your recovery.
