Blepharoplasty or eye lid surgery brightens ones appearance and is often the first area to reveal stress, tiredness or age. It is a commonly requested procedure as the results can be so very exciting. Eyelid surgery addresses puffiness and loose skin (sagging and bagging) around the eyes. The results can quite natural and amazing. Many people comment on how clean their eyes feel afterwards and how bright their appearance is. Some comment that they get comments that they look like they lost weight or feel relaxed. Many wish they would have had the procedure done earlier because for the positive effects they have noticed in themselves.

Blepharoplasty often requires a little trim of skin, some muscle tightening, and either fat removal or repositioning depending upon individual characteristics and requests. Eyelid surgery commonly performed on both the upper and lower lids in order to perform a harmonious look. On occasion a brow lift and or a facelift will also be added to enhance the face as well. Recently Dr Charles Perry has added the transconjunctival blepharoplasty for those patients whom only have a little extra fat that bulges from the lower lid. The advantage of this approach is that there are no external incisions on the lower eyelid. Some have referred to it as a “no touch technique” or incision-less (like the closed rhinoplasty). This allows for quicker recovery in most cases. It is important to review your goals with your physician prior to any surgical procedure and discuss in detail all the possibilities. In some instances a little skin can be removed from the lower lid or a laser resurfacing performed at the same time to enhance the skins texture tightness and result. There are many options available for and we look forward to discussing your individual needs.

With the advent of Botox most cosmetic surgeons have realized the importance that the relaxation of muscle around the brow has for the appearance. It softens those hard lines between the brows and relaxes the appearance. With over 3 million people utilizing Botox a year at intervals of three to four months – many people have decided to do something a little longer lasting. More patients are deciding to proceed with blepharoplasty or brow lift and at the same time have a small reduction of the muscles that create the elevens and furrow the brow. This with a skin, muscle and fat reduction of the upper lid provides a cleaner, natural younger look. While at the same time the muscles that cause frowning and furrowing can be slightly reduced in volume decreasing the frown and allowing the brow to elevate. This provides essentially a similar effect of Botox or Dysport injections without the need for as many trips to the office. This is commonly down with the brow lift and now days we are also doing this with our upper lid blepharoplasty as more and more people become aware of the subtle yet natural enhancement it provides. There are many new and exciting techniques today. Perhaps it is time to consider freshening up the eyes.

At Chrysalis Cosmetics in Sacramento California we have been addressing the lower eyelid hollowness or puffiness with blepharoplasty for years. Removing excess skin and lifting the stretched out muscles as well as contouring the eyelid puffiness. In more recent years we are also offering similar contour changes without the operating room. Using laser and injecrtable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm as well as Radiesse Dr Perry (A Board Certified Plastic Surgeon) has been able to offer lasting contouring of the lower lid and cheek without surgery in some cases. Of course blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery) lasts longer and is less expensive (2,500- 6000) than fillers and laser and Botox over time, however for some people it is the only way to go as they do not have the time to recover from surgery.
One recent example pictured here did not want to under go a surgical procedure.

BeforeAfter - Beautiful
She has such a busy complicated life and could not arrange for the time off to recover from surgery.

Laser, Restylane, Juvederm and Botox
She decided instead to make use of Botox to relax the smile lines and lift the brow as well as Profractional laser resurfacing and some Restylane and Juvederm under the eyes.

Blepharoplasty or Laser and Fillers?

Refreshed and Beautiful
By addressing her skin with the laser and the muscles with the Botox and the volume with the Restylane and Juvederm a subtle yet youthful look was created and she just radiates! While she did experience bruising requiring cover up she was able to work the next day.

When you look in the mirror in the morning and the skin won’t move out of your eyes you may be ready for a blepharoplasty. In the Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom, El Dorado Hills area we see many people with excess skin around the eyes that interferes with vision and the ability to apply sun screen or eye shadow. At Chrysalis Cosmetics in Sacramento, Dr Charles Perry performs blepharoplasty to help you regain the crispness of the eyelids and shape the brows and cheeks if you’d like. For some people laser skin resurfacing provides all the tightening around the eyes that is needed and for others laser combined with a blepharoplasty will be needed to create the look you desire.
Blepharoplasty involves sculpting of the excess skin, muscle, and fat around the eyes and can be done with you awake or asleep. The procedure often takes a little more than hour or two depending upon the techniques required to create the look you’d like. If sutures are required they can be removed at the next office visit a week later. It is really exciting to look at photos from before the procedure and after the procedure at three months. Sometimes complete healing takes a year, however most people are back to work in a week or two. Certainly cover can be used to help conceal the initial bruising or swelling that can arise.
One of the exciting new advances with blepharoplasty is the combination of fillers and Botox either before or after to enhance and preserve the look. Latisse, a product that promotes the growth of thicker darker longer lashes can also make the eyes pop as well and are a great addition to the procedure. The combination of fillers such as Juvederm and the Chemodenervation of Dysport or Botox can really enhance the look even more. We are also seeing more and more people have a laser skin resurfacing instead of the blepharoplasty or blepharoplasty revision. For many the laser tightens the loose skin and strengthens the dermis and provides a nice enhancement, however for some the excess loose muscle and fat as well as the loose supportive structures require some tightening and a blepharoplasty with a canthoplasty or canthopexy may be required to enhance the look in a natural way. In today’s world looking your very best can mean looking youthful, fit happy, and healthy. What makes you look your very best is often individualized and there really does not exist one right look for everyone. When considering a facelift in Sacramento California be sure you do your homework regarding your options. As plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons such as Dr Charles Perry examine more faces every year for rejuvenation it has become clear that there are certainly some characteristics of an aged appearance. In fact studies have been done examining identical twins to compare what makes people looking more vital and youthful. In youth (referring to persons less than age 40) angularity often is rated as more attractive while after forty fuller cheeks and less hollowness around the eyes is often more youthful or vigorous looking. The skin tone and texture also changes s does the distribution of volume around the face. In Sacramento as in many places around California including Tahoe, Roseville, Elk Grove Modesto, Stockton and Folsom as well El Dorado Hills, it will require removal means smooth skin and the absence of sun spots and fine lines that can create a tired elderly appearance.
At Chrysalis Cosmetics we will evaluate your features and make some suggestions as to the options available to enhance your look. For some people an eyelid lift is all that is needed, while for others an eyelid lift and a browlift is required to enhance the periorbital region. As always it is important to discuss all of your options prior to proceeding with a facelift. Often times we have found that laser resurfacing along with a thorough skin care regiment with some augmentation of the lips and cheek using products such as Resytlane or Juvederm enhances the look and for some enough to avoid a secondary facelift. Combining skin resurfacing lasers or chemical peels can really brighten and tighten the skin leaving you feeling younger and more entergetic. We have found that most people want a natural look and this often requires refreshing not only the skin but the facial volume and removal of excess sagging. When combined a more natural look results and we are all happy.
Dr Charles Perry specializes in creating a unique and individualized result designed especially for you. At the consultation your ideas will be discussed and several options presented to you. Latisse is now available at Chrysalis Cosmetics.
With all the new products available this year to enhance your look it can be confusing, however one you will want to check out is Latisse. You may have already noticed some dramatic eyelashes as we are seeing more and more people enhancing their eyes with Latisse. This is a new product from the makers of Botox and Juvederm – Allergan. Allergan also makes Vivite as well as Silicone and Saline Breast implants.
Latisse grows the eyelashes in about a month. Long eyelashes tend to set off the eyes and can enhance the appearance. A prescription is needed to treat the hypotrichosis (small hairs) of the eyelashes – so a visit to the office is required. We can demonstrate how to correctly grow your lashes into a thicker, longer, and darker more beautiful lash.
Latisse was just approved by the FDA and we have been seeing some great results already. Latisse works by increasing the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle by lengthening it and stimulating this phase. The product was originally designed to help people with glaucoma, however the patients and doctors noticed that not only did the bimatoprost (Latisse) solution (a prostaglandin) decrease the intraocular pressure it also grew their eyelashes and eyebrow longer thicker and darker.
Of course individual results may vary. We look forward to seeing you soon.

With thin skin and more movement than any other area of the face our eyes often reveal our age prior to other areas of the face. Changes of the eyes characteristic of aging involve a puffiness of the lower lids and a decent of the eyelid cheek skin interface. This creates the appearance of tiredness.
The good news is that there are many different options for rejuvenation of the eyes. Fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane as well as Botox can assist in smoothing out some of the wrinkles and are often considered preventative adjunctive procedures. When considering upper facial rejuvenation the excess upper eye lid skin often becomes the focus and for good reason as this extra skin can even hide the eye itself. As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery we want to create a natural lasting look that brings out the inner beauty. When considering refreshing the periorbital region eye brow position and the lower lid quality optimization enhance the results and create a lasting natural look.
Blepharoplasty has undergone many changes over the past 100 years. At Chrysalis Cosmetics, Dr Charles Perry performs a complete blepharoplasty that corrects the signs of aging in a lasting predictable way. The brow is placed in the correct position. This often entails lifting the lateral aspect slightly to open the eye. After this the excess upper eyelid skin is removed and the lid position optimized. The cheek is then positioned to smooth out the circle that often forms under the eyes. The excess skin is then removed and the muscle tightened and repositioned. Dr Perry gently lifts the eye lid skin muscle and cheek and repositions the orbital fat to make a smooth fresh looking lower eye lid. Tightening the ligaments of the eye lid is the cornerstone to the operation in that this provides the lasting look that so many patients request and enjoy.

Our eyes are one of the most noticeable anatomic regions of the body. We look into the eyes to gain understanding and meaning to spoken words. However, it is not necessarily the eyes we are looking at – it is the surrounding anatomy that changes and reveals our true intention. Our eyes don’t change – the anatomy surrounding the eyes does. The skin and muscle around the eyes move to reveal what our mind is trying to convey – the wrinkle around the lateral aspect of eyes when laughing, the wide open eyes of fear, the elevated brows when surprised are just some of examples of this movement.
The thin skin around the eyes is subjected to more radiation damage (sun damage), especially in Sacramento, California were the great outdoors consists of lots of wind, sun, and water which leads to more physical trauma to the exposed fragile eyelid and brow skin. This is why the eyes often give away our age sooner and more noticeably than other parts of our anatomy. Sometimes the tired or aged appearance of the eyes does not match the vibrant, youthful way we feel.

At Chrysalis Cosmetics located in Sacramento California we understand this concept and focus on creating a more harmonious appearance between the inner self and the outer appearance. There are many different options to improve the appearance of the eyes. Often we start by creating smoother skin around the eyes using skin care programs, laser rejuvenation and injectible rejuvenation products. Once the skin tone and texture have been optimized we can then enhance the eyes by removing or tightening excess or loose, sagging tissue framing the eyes. This procedure is commonly referred to as Blepharoplasty. By creating a beautiful frame work around the eyes we allow others to see that vibrant inner self more clearly. Live well, enjoy life, eat balanced meals, exercise, and be good to those around you.
