Plastic Surgery Increasing in Popularity in 2011

Posted by drperry in Sacramento Plastic Surgery

Chrysalis Cosmetics 2011

At Chrysalis Cosmetics (Sacramento California) we applaud everyone who chose to enhance their appearance in 2011 and continue to improve and inspire those around them.  You are not alone! We are excited to share the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual Statistics Report for 2011. Over 13.8 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed last year in the United Sates alone. This represents an increase of 5 % compared to 2010.  This is somewhat surprising considering the economy, however it was in line with what we witnessed.  The most common surgical procedures remain breast augmentation, nose shaping, liposuction, eyelid surgery and face-lifting.  In our clinic we tend to see more tummy tucks but have noticed an increase in demand for face-lifting, eyelid surgery and breast enhancement. Women requested over 90 % of all cosmetic procedures (12.1 million) and the 40-54 year old age grouping was the largest segment of the population utilizing the services of their local plastic surgeon (Over 48% of the total procedures for 2011).   Interestingly enough, the pacific/mountain region remains the busiest cosmetic region in the country and minimally invasive procedures are continuing to grow in popularity.  We are certainly witnessing a larger acceptance of Botox and Fillers.

At Chrysalis Cosmetic we are excited for the 2012 report and expect to see continued demand for services that enhance quality of life and improve the appearance.

Plastic Surgeon in Sacramento Discusses Lip Augmentation Popularity

Sacramento, CA — At his Sacramento plastic surgery practice, Dr. Charles Perry says he has seen a significant increase in demand for lip augmentation procedures to enhance the volume and fullness of lips. While Dr. Perry says a majority of the interest comes from his female patients, men have also played their part in the rising number of requests for the procedure. He says surgical lip augmentation has made immense strides in helping patients achieve a more voluptuous lip shape than possible with dermal fillers thanks to an effective and safe procedure.

According to the latest statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), lip augmentation procedures have increased by 49% to over 25,000 since 2010, the second highest increase of any cosmetic procedure (surgical or non-surgical) over the past year. With an overall rise of 5% in the popularity of cosmetic surgery according to the ASPS report, Dr. Perry says newer procedures like lip enhancement have had a drastic impact in shaping patient views about aesthetic treatment. He says patients of all ages are seeing the advancements in lip augmentation as an effective means to improve their appearance by making subtle, yet noticeable changes to the volume and vitality of their lip shape.

As a plastic surgeon in Sacramento, Dr. Perry says he sees a majority of female patients in their forties requesting lip augmentation; however, the procedure is rising in other patient demographics as well. He says more permanent lip implants and lip lifts are becoming popular procedures for women of all ages and men between the ages of 30 and 50. While younger patients often seek the procedure in preparation for an upcoming event or special occasion, Dr. Perry says his older patients have found that surgical lip enhancement can help them maintain the youthful vibrancy in their appearance. He says the time of year also is a factor in patients’ decision to undergo lip augmentation, as younger patients typically come to his practice for the procedure during the spring and summer and his more mature patients find the fall a more enticing season for enhancement of their lips.

“We believe in helping patients achieve their goals. This often involves a consultation and then a discussion of the different options and products for most. However, for seasoned patients, the process is often abbreviated as they will know just what it is they need in order for them to look their best, and we simply follow their lead,” says Dr. Perry.

Regardless of age or reason for undergoing a cosmetic procedure, Dr. Perry says consulting with a board-certified and experienced plastic surgeon is essential for achieving the proper results. He stresses the need for choosing a practice who is dedicated to personalized care, particularly with lip augmentation, as the procedure requires special intricacy and precision because of the position of the lips as a central focal point on the face. Dr. Perry says partnering with a passionate and qualified surgeon means patients can achieve a fuller volume to their lips and a more confident outlook on life.

Lip lifting to reduce the prominence of the upper lip and restore a beautiful smile. Show Your Beautiful Teeth!

Posted by drperry in Facial Plastic Surgery

Sacramento California.  Have you ever wanted to see more of your upper lip or teeth when you smile?  Does your upper lip look a little long and our upper lip a little thin?  Have you ever wanted to see more of the red part of your upper lip?  Have you tried fillers and not achieved the look you desired of your upper lip or corners of the mouth?

If you answered yes, then the lip lift (sometimes referred to as a bull horn lip lift) may be something to consider.  At Chrysalis Cosmetics we are excited to offer the increasingly popular lip lift to help enhance your appearance and confidence. We wanted to offer this article as a way of introducing a procedure that often gets little press outside the facial plastic surgery literature. The origin of the lip lift most likely dates back to the time when we as plastic surgeons began repairing cleft lips as many of the techniques utilized have been enhanced and modified from reconstruction techniques.  More recently they have been refined and have become a more sought after procedure for facial enhancement, especially as plastic surgeons have become more adept at augmenting the lips with facial fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm and implants such as the Permalip from SurgiSil.  In the past, the lip lift was done on the lip itself.  This incision was placed in the red/white junction border. This worked well for some and for others it left an incision or scar that was hard to hide without makeup or tattooing.  Many plastic surgeons now perform the lip lift from an incision under the nose (Bull horn Lip Lift).

The incision is often hidden slightly better in this position and can be contoured to the nose as well.  Lip lifting requires some tailoring of the procedure for each individual and the incision placement is often customized to achieve the lip lift required for optimal aesthetics.  In many, a corner lip lift is often added, lifting the corners of the mouth directly to provide optimal lip balance.  On occasion, filler can make the lip lift as well as bring the upper and lower lip volume into balance.

Lip lift incisions examples

Other procedures that can enhance the beauty of the mouth can be considered with the lip lift. For some, a nasolabial fold excision can be a welcome addition once facial volume and skin tone have been optimized through filler placement and laser resurfacing.  There are many complimentary procedures to the lip lift that may enhance the final result as well as improve the overall aesthetic balance of the lip.  Your plastic surgeon will be happy to discuss this procedure in more detail as there are so many exciting possibilities.  Plastic surgery is not without risks, and healing from this procedure does take some time and results vary of course. Incision revisions can often ameliorate some delicate healing challenges.  A little filler and a touch of laser may also be obligatory to optimize the result.  Lip rejuvenation with lip lifting is an exciting neoadjuvant to the classic puff (Restylane or Juvederm) and buff (laser resurfacing with Sciton TRL) lip treatment.  It can also be a welcome addition to freshen a previously completed facial rejuvenation.  If you have any questions please give our office a call. 916-273-7435.

Sacramento Plastic Surgeon Says Facial Procedure Combinations Contribute to Facelift Popularity

Plastic Surgeon in Sacramento on Facelift Combinations

At his Sacramento plastic surgery practice, Dr. Charles Perry says he has seen a significant growth in demand for facelift procedures since the beginning of the new year. Now in the top five cosmetic surgical procedures according to the latest American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics, Dr. Perry says facelifts are commonly being combined with other treatments such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), facial implants, brow lift and laser rejuvenation to further enhance the quality of results that can be achieved by plastic surgeons.

According to the recently released 2011 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), facelifts have made a resurgence in popularity amongst Americans, increasing by 5% since 2010 to approximately 119,000 performed, and have found their way into the top five cosmetic surgical procedures for the first time since 2004. Dr. Charles Perry, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Sacramento, says he has observed a similar trend at his practice and believes the origin of the rising demand for facelifts to be linked to the common request for combined facial procedures as well as an aging baby boomer population. “People are excited about taking control of their appearance, and we believe in helping our patients achieve their goals. As the boomer generation reaches later stages in life, many of our patients are looking to maintain their appearance and reduce the signs of aging through a natural looking procedure. We also are seeing younger patients now in their forties and fifties looking to maintain their appearance in the most effective ways for their individual needs.”

With the growing popularity of facelifts, Dr. Perry says he has also been performing more combinations of facial procedures such as brow lifts and eyelid surgery in Sacramento on patients in their mid forties and fifties. He says undergoing multiple procedures at once offers a number of benefits to patients, including reduced downtime and recovery, as well as noticeably enhanced results in improving one’s appearance and helping one look and feel younger more harmoniously. Dr. Perry adds that with rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, and facelift all in the top five cosmetic surgical procedures performed, the popularity of facial procedures will undoubtedly contribute to greater advancements and improvements in the techniques and technology available to doctors and patients.

Dr. Perry says the combination of procedures is especially exciting in the cosmetic enhancement environment. “The combination of new technologies is allowing for individual customization of procedures. These new tools address the many different signs of aging in a more complete way. And as our patients are more educated about the many options available they often are requesting several procedures at once to achieve the look they desire.”

Whether patients are looking for a combination of facial procedures or a single procedure like a facelift in Sacramento, Dr. Perry says he strongly recommends consulting with an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon before undergoing any treatment. He says partnering with a board-certified plastic surgeon ensures patients receive the highest level of care from a passionate and personable practice. “We find that plastic surgeons that maintain their board certification are often the ones that have dedicated themselves to a life-long learning process. While this is no guarantee of excellent results, being board certified demonstrates a commitment to excellence. By doing their homework, patients can find that surgeon that has dedicated their professional life to achieving excellence as viewed by their colleagues.”

Botox, Xeomin, Dysport used for more than just fine lines.

Posted by drperry in Fillers and Botox

Sacramento, California.  Botox Dysport and now Xeomin are chemoneuromodulating proteins used commonly in plastic surgery practices to enhance the appearance.  A recent study from Chicago looked at the often sited but undocumented claim that Botox improves self-esteem and quality of life. This double blinded study published by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery 2010;36:2088-2097 revealed that both self – esteem and quality of life was improved for those using Botox and even speculated that productivity may be improved as well.  The results revealed improvements in self rated mood, intellect, self worth, body satisfaction, appearance, attractiveness, sense of well being; performance related self esteem following Botox injections for up to six months.

Xeomin (Incobotulinumtoxin A) is the newest neurotoxin that is used to modulate the neuromuscular response.  Developed from the same strain of Clostridium Botulium as Botox, its dosing strength is similar.   Because it is a pure chemoneuromodulator unlike Botox it does not require frozen storage.  It is also being offered at lower price which maybe significant for some, especially when larger doses are required.  We are excited to offer this new product from Merz Pharmaceuticals which also offers Radiesse for your convenience at Chrysalis Cosmetics.

T’is the Season For Reflection

The wall

On the way to finishing my first marathon mile 18 the wall

Sacramento, California

While at a recent meeting of the Greater Sacramento Plastic Surgery Society I was caught up thinking about the end of another year 2011.

Every year, about this time, I think of all the amazing moments we have shared together. What a true luxury it is to reflect and feel the gratitude for the many good things we experience in our lives.  Just living in this amazing part of the world is such a blessing.  However, when give a chance to pause it is not the things in my life I feel the most appreciation for, it is the people.  Family always comes to mind.  I am thankful for the work ethic and sense of responsibility gained through being raised by such loving parents. Grandmother passed this year and I am thankful for all the wisdom she gave our family.  My wife turned forty with a kind of grace that continues to make one smile.  I am grateful for friends and colleagues especially those that encourage and support endeavors that have made life more meaningful.  I am thankful for the people that I am fortunate enough serve everyday and their trust in our office.  I am appreciative of the opportunity to work with wonderful people and their families.  Being in the company of others provides a purpose for the skills I feel blessed to have honed through the years and for this I am also indebted.  Personally I am blessed with health and the gift of hope that next year will be even brighter.  Enjoy the Holidays!

Sacramento Plastic Surgeon Offers Tips for Staying Healthy and Confident During the Holiday Season

Posted by rosemont in In the Media

According to a recent study by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the overall demand for cosmetic procedures increased by 9% in 2010. As the holiday season looms and patients begin to seek aesthetic enhancements for the coming parties and gift exchanges, Sacramento plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Perry says there are a number of ways to improve patient confidence through cosmetic enhancements and lifestyle changes. Dr. Perry discusses tips for staying healthy and looking great during the holidays through dietary and lifestyle choices, as well as surgical procedures like breast augmentation in Sacramento.

At his Sacramento plastic surgery practice, Dr. Charles Perry says he has seen an increase in demand for plastic surgery as many of his patients are gearing up for the holiday rush of gift-giving and social gatherings. The latest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) confirm an increase in overall cosmetic procedures as well over the past year, with a growth in demand of almost 9% in 2010. The ASAPS also shows a rise in U. S. approval of cosmetic enhancement to over half (51%) of the population.

Because of the increased awareness and demand for cosmetic enhancements, Dr. Perry says patients should be aware of their lifestyles and make conscious, active decisions to stay healthy in order to maximize the results such procedures can achieve. He also adds that even if patients are not seeking a cosmetic enhancement through such procedures as a facelift or laser skin resurfacing in Sacramento, they can still take action to look and feel great during the holidays by eating and sleeping well. “There are three ways we have found to maintain your sanity and vibrancy; take time to nourish your body with the right foods, sleep, and exercise. One of the ways you can do this living in the Sacramento Valley is by eating the fruits and vegetables that are in season and grown locally. Also, schedule your sleep cycle and make it a habit. We feel better, sleep better and look better when we use our bodies.”

By practicing healthy lifestyle choices, Dr. Perry says patients can fight the inevitable stresses of the holidays and feel confident in their bodies. However, he also says that sometimes living healthy and staying active can still fall short of a person’s desired aesthetic appearance and can take more time than many have available. Through enhancements such as a mommy makeover in Sacramento, Dr. Perry says plastic surgery can give patients the extra emphasis to naturally complement their body. He adds that there are a number of procedures that can increase confidence and happiness in patients. “Facelifts and liposuction are also popular this season as they afford a more dramatic change to the appearance and can be an early Christmas present to one’s self.”

Regardless of whether patients are seeking a cosmetic enhancement through plastic surgery or a healthy change in their daily routines before the holidays, Dr. Perry suggests consulting with a board-certified surgeon before undergoing any type of procedure. He also adds that selecting a dedicated and passionate doctor will ensure the best results for each individual’s needs. “It is always a very individualized choice and an exciting time to be making changes for the upcoming year.”

Plastic Surgeon in Sacramento Discusses Breast Implant Bombs

Plastic Surgeon in Sacramento Discusses Possibility of Surgically Implanted Bombs

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was recently briefed by the federal government on new intelligence that shows terrorists could be using breast implants as surgically implanted bombs. At his Sacramento plastic surgery practice, Dr. Charles Perry discusses the likelihood of such an event, and how a terrorist could turn a procedure like breast augmentation into a potentially destructive threat.

The federal government recently briefed the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on the potential threat of breast implant bombs. While the information does not constitute an immediate threat, Sacramento plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Perry says the ability to turn breast implants into bombs is a real possibility. “Conceivably, a sterile device could be manufactured that would detonate inside a breast implant. All it would need is a propellant, an igniter, and a detonating receiver.”

However, Dr. Perry says he finds it extremely difficult to believe any doctor would so blatantly ignore their Hippocratic oath to do no harm. He adds that even if a doctor were to cast aside his extensive training and commitment to helping people, the breast implants turned explosive devices would have a different appearance and feel.

Despite the ability to conceal a device from the naked eye, Dr. Perry believes the advanced body imaging devices used by the TSA would be able to detect a breast implant bomb. However, he adds that while a device someone had swallowed or implanted elsewhere on the body would look suspicious, a device within a breast implant may not warrant a red flag.

Regardless of the potential that exists for using cosmetic enhancement procedures such as breast augmentation to carry out a terrorist plot, Dr. Perry says he remains doubtful. While this may be a viable option conceptually, now that the TSA and federal government are aware of the threat, he says the ability to successfully implant and detonate a breast implant bomb seems unlikely.

Breast Implants As Bombs – Boob Bombs Possible?

Posted by drperry in Breast Augmentation, Uncategorized

Surgically Implanted Bombs

As a plastic surgeon in Sacramento California we hear all sorts of things.  We were recently asked about implantable boob bombs by a client.  She worked for the TSA and last year they underwent some training on implantable explosive devices. Recently a news story about implantable bombs caught our eyes as well.  Would it be possible to implant a bomb into a breast implant?  The answer is yes.  And could it be placed safely and effectively – yes.  However the why and who would be the real questions.  Conceivably a sterile device could be manufactured that would detonate inside a breast implant.  All it would need to contain is a propellant, an igniter, and a detonating receiver.  With enough combustible energy (say more than 3 ounces – like 20 ounces) the device could also conceivably disrupt a crowded place or an airplane.  A standard breast implant being around 300 cc or 10 ounces it seems plausible and possible, and again why and who would do this. And really why not put the device into the abdomen instead of the breast?

We certainly have no knowledge of any doctor who would do this. It goes against the Hippocratic oath – First Do No Harm. What Doctor who has gone through such extensive training would even consider doing this? Perhaps he or she wouldn’t know what they are doing? That is really unlikely as the implants when placed are transparent and need to be inspected prior to placement. Not only would they have to look different but they most likely would feel different too. Maybe they could be coerced into such an act? This doesn’t seem likely but possible – perhaps.  However, who would even consider having this done?

These are the real questions – who and how. The other issue is avoidance of detection. Could this go undetected?  With the advanced imaging devices probably not however with a pat down search – probably. Certainly a question the TSA must have an answer for. Say a bomb was placed into a breast implant – would they be able to detect it? However it would still be fair to say that the limiting factor would be the motivation of the human sacrifice and the doctor implementing this diabolical plan that would be the crux of the matter. The other insights are just little details.

For now Boob Bombs is perhaps just another interesting news story.

Dr. Perry Discusses Living Well in Sacramento, CA

Dr. Charles Perry recently decided to practice what he preached to his Sacramento plastic surgery patients. As he turned 40, he says he was compelled to follow the methods for aging well he commonly stresses at his practice, which includes a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and aesthetic maintenance with minimally-invasive procedures such as BOTOX injections®, dermal fillers, and Restylane.

Dr. Charles Perry is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Sacramento, CA. As he turned 40, he says he decided it was time to start following the advice he gives his patients by implementing some better lifestyle habits. In a recent post entitled “Purpose Driven Plastic Surgery – Aging, Diet, and Exercise,” Dr. Perry describes the steps he took to get in shape and lose weight, as well as the common signs of aging that can be delayed through well-known minimally-invasive procedures, such as BOTOX Injections®, Juvederm, and Restylane.

As summer approaches, Dr. Perry says many of his patients consider a wide range of procedures to help them prepare their bodies for the season. While common consultations address surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures ranging from breast augmentation to liposuction, Dr. Perry says he also stresses the need for a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, as well as less-invasive procedures to help patients maintain their dedication to looking and feeling good.

In the recent post, he outlines his approach to losing weight by being more food-conscious and deciding to train for Olympic and half Ironman Triathlons. However, in the post he also discusses the side-effects of losing weight later in life, and says he has had to adjust his skin maintenance plan, so he will continue to look as young as he feels.

Ultimately, Dr. Perry says the changes he made helped him regain his zest for life after losing over 35 pounds and 7 inches around his waist. He adds that he hopes his experience provides a source of inspiration for his patients as they pursue the body they desire ahead of the approaching summer season.
